The History of Bed and Breakfast

The term 'Bed and Breakfast', also shortened to the term B&B, is a phrase that originates from the UK. It has proved so popular that the term is now used all over the world. Bed and Breakfast (or B&B) is used to describe an establishment that combines overnight accommodation with breakfast. Typically a Bed and Breakfast will not offer daytime or evening meals but this can vary between place to place. Bed and Breakfasts are privately owned homes with small amount of rooms available to let out to guests.

When staying at a Bed and Breakfast, you can expect to stay in a private bedroom with private bathrooms / ensuite bathroom. Some of these bathrooms will have baths, others will have relaxing shower enclosures. You may find that sometimes a Bed and Breakfast offers a private room but with a shared bathroom. When it comes to Breakfast, a full english breakfast is usually on offer and can be served in the dining room or the host's kitchen.

B&Bs are usually operated either as a secondary source of income or as a primary occupation. It is the owners themselves who will usually prepare the breakfast and make the rooms ready for your arrival. If a property hires a professional person to manage the Bed and Breakfast, then strictly speaking the B&B the becomes an Inn, Guest House or Small Hotel.
