The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Once part of the estate belonging to the Tremayne family the lost gardens of Heligan are one of the most popular gardens in the U.K.

After the end of the first world war when 16 of the 22 gardeners at Heligan were killed the gardens were neglected and fell into disrepair until the early 1990s when Tim Smitt and some other enthusiasts decided to restore it back to it's original state. The restoration was a great success and along the way helped the local economy by providing employment .

The gardens now hold a marvellous collection of Rhododendrons and Camellias, and features a series of lakes fed by a century old ram pump, an amazing Victorian vegetable garden, an Italian garden and a fabulous wild area filled with sub-tropical tree ferns called "The Jungle". The gardens also have the only remaining pineapple pit in Europe.

As well as all this The Lost Gardens are home to many wild creatures you can view when you visit Horsemoor Hide . With it's open shutters ,one way glass windows ,hidden cameras and screens this is a wonderful way to watch wildlife in their natural surroundings and in the main season Heligan arranges guided tours and bat and barn owl evenings.

With so much to see and do Heligan Gardens are a must when you visit Cornwall and being only a short drive from Cestria Bed and Breakfast nowhere could be more convenient to stay.
